Zagori: Magic Place on Earth
It was just a thought and after a few days it became real.
Easter is close, and to avoid crowded villages, I decided to travel to my home town, Ioannina, and spend a few days with my little one.
The distance from Ioannina to the villages takes almost 1 hour and 30 minutes drive and should not be missed in case you visit Ioannina and spend a few days there.
The scenery is magical. Voidomatis river attracts people allover the world to enjoy nature and water sports like rafting and kayaking. It has been characterized as one of the cleanest rivers in Europe as it doesn’t face any environmental issues. The river is spanned by several stone bridges, the most famous being the Kledonas Bridge.
Next stop was Megalo Papigo and Mikro Papigo. From the very first moment both villages attract you. The stone made houses are surrounded by snowcapped mountains during the winter. Megalo Papigo is more famous and has more tavernas serving up traditional Greek food, coffee and spirits.
Mikro Papigo is more quite but according to my preferences, it’s more attractive. The imposing mountains stand over the village and the feeling that you get when you see them is just an awe. The paths lead to the mountains and to unexplored areas. It’s up to you if you choose one to make unforgettable experiences.
In case you visit both villages, you can stay in Mikro Papigo at “Mikro Papigo 1700 Hotel & Spa”. It’s new, it’s luxurious and the treatment is the best you will find.
For coffee and more, Pinocchio is an option that is in Mikro Papigo.
For lunch visit Astraka restaurant. It’s located in Megalo Papigo. The products are local, and the portions are huge.
Last but not least, if you have only one day to spend in Ioannina, don’t miss to walk through the lake and inside the castle.
Stroll around the city and enjoy your coffee to one of many cafes that are in front of this magic lake.
Have your lunch at Metsovitiki Folia, buy local products and before saying goodbye to this amazing city, taste bougatsa at Select
and buy baklava, produced in many different ways, from Nousias.
Where to stay? Of course in the castle at Its Kale Boutique Hotel.
